Beautiful Italy is my favorite place to visit abroad because of its pristine beaches, world-renowned cuisine, rich history, and well-dressed residents.
I want to highlight some of the best parts of this gorgeous country for you to consider for your next Italian holiday.
To begin, Rome. Rome is the capital of Italy and it is the home to many of the iconic "must-visit" sites in the country.
Colosseum
The Colosseum needs no introduction. This amphitheater completed in 80 AD was home to some of the most brutal and spectacular entertainment for the Romans. It famously housed gladiator fights but also had the ability to be flooded at the stage floor level for ships to sail as well! There is a wealth of history to learn about here and I suggest signing up for a tour to learn facts like these.
The Forum
Speaking of tours, the tour I took of the Colosseum also included a guided walking tour of The Forum. The Forum is made up of ruins of ancient government buildings and is home to the Temple of Cesar, where Cesar is buried.
Pantheon
The Pantheon is a marvel. When I walked under the rotunda I was actually breathless. Ancient Romans erected this unbelievable dome without cranes and modern technology (obviously), yet this feat seems unfathomable. It was so impressive in real life that it looked like a computer rendering to me. I read up ahead of time and found that I didn't need a tour guide.
The Trevi Foutain
The Trevi is a must-see for many, so be prepared to be one of many. It sure is fun to toss your coin in and have a La Dolce Vita moment.
Piazza Navona
The Piazza Navona is on my must-see list. In the middle of the piazza is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Bernini. In the center of the fountain is an Egyptian Obelisk. I would love to stay in a hotel bordering this Piazza on a future trip to Rome. It is still energetic and busy without being overcrowded. I felt more like a true Roman here than in most of the touristic parts of the city.
Vatican City
Whether or not you are a Catholic, Vatican City is on my list of must-see places. The Sistine Chapel is reason enough to make the pilgrimage to this city-state within Rome. St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum are other attractions inside the walls. Don't miss Michelangelo's Pietà sculpture just inside the Basilica doors.
